JAPANESE SCIENTISTS PHOTOGRAPH A LIVING GIGANT SQUID IN THE WILD FOR FIRST TIME
The giant squid can be found in books and in myths, but for the first time, a team of Japanese scientists has captured on film one of the most mysterious creatures of the deep sea in its natural habitat. The team led by Tsunemi Kubodera, from the National Science Museum in Tokyo, tracked the 26-foot long Architeuthis as it attacked prey nearly 3,000 feet deep off the coast of Japan's Bonin islands.
"We believe this is the first time a grown giant squid has been captured on camera in its natural habitat," said Kyoichi Mori, a marine researcher who co-authored a piece in Wednesday's issue of the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences.
The camera was operated by remote control during research at the end of October 2004, Mori told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
Mori said the giant squid, purplish red like its smaller brethren, attacked its quarry aggressively, calling into question the image of the animal as lethargic and slow moving.
"Contrary to belief that the giant squid is relatively inactive, the squid we captured on film actively used its enormous tentacles to go after prey," Mori said.
"It went after some bait that we had on the end of the camera and became stuck, and left behind a tentacle" about six yards long, Mori said.
Kubodera, also reached by the AP, said researchers ran DNA tests on the tentacle and found it matched those of other giant squids found around Japan.
"But other sightings were of smaller, or very injured squids washed toward the shore or of parts of a giant squid," Kubodera said. "This is the first time a full-grown, healthy squid has been sighted in its natural environment in deep water."
Kubodera said the giant squid's tentacle would not grow back, but the squid's life was not in danger.
Jim Barry, a marine biologist at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in California, has searched for giant squid on his own expeditions without luck.
"It's the holy grail of deep sea animals," he said. "It's one that we have never seen alive, and now someone has video of one."
New Zealand's leading authority on the giant squid, marine biologist Steve O'Shea, praised the Japanese team's feat.
"Through sheer ... determination the guy has gone on and done it," said O'Shea, chief marine scientist at the Auckland University of Technology, who is not linked to the Japanese research.
O'Shea said he hopes to capture juvenile giant squid and grow them in captivity. He captured 17 of them five years ago but they died in captivity.
"Our reaction is one of tremendous relief that the so-called ... race (to film the giant squid) is over ... because the animal has consumed the last eight or nine years of my life," O'Shea said of the film.
Giant squid have long attracted human fascination, appearing in myths of the ancient Greeks, as well as Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." Scientific interest in the animals has surged in recent years as more specimens have been caught in commercial fishing nets or found washed up on shores.
Kubodera would make no claims about the scientific significance of his team's work.
"As for the impact our discovery will have on marine research, I'll leave to other researchers to decide," he said.
Other biologists saidi they expected the video would provide insight on the animal's behavior underwater.
"Nobody has been able to observe a large giant squid where it lives," said Randy Kochevar, a deep sea biologist also with the Monterey aquarium. "There are people who said it would never be done."

These are some points which we think are worth noticing about Death/Gore/Grind.
Of course these are only OUR opinions so that doesn't mean you have to agree....
(In case you don't agree, then you probably suck anyway)
1. You musnt't be good at playing your instrument. Technicality is a show off.
2. You must record your Demo/CD/LP/EP/whatever with a raw production. Therefore it has to be done either at home or at a garage with your own recording equipment. Good production is NOT what Death/Gore/Grind is all about.
3. Pitch shifted vocals are a must to spice up the music(k) with a tinge of deranged insanity.
4. Even if you play the most brutal music ever, if you even own a Cradle of Filth shirt, you're simply an idiotic fart.
5. We need not mention that down-tuning is the most mandatory thing in Death/Gore/Grind.
The lower the better.
6. Death/Gore/Grind is all about Death, Gore, Porn, Excrements and the entire universe as far as negativity is concerned. Any peace, christian lyrics prove you're simply playing the wrong music.
7. You should use intros from films to enhance the perversion, sickness and back up your songs. Only ONE intro before the beginning of your material shows that you are not perverted, dirty, depraved and sick enough motherfucker, and that you're a weak pussy piece of shit on a stick.
8. As a complement to rule #7, the intros from films shouldn't be taken from crappy mainstream films such as "Scream",or "I know what you did last summer" or the other cheap crap that's coming out today. Your choice of films plays a very important factor in the quality of the sickness. Beware.
9. If you start off as a Death/Gore/Grind band, then quit or even worse, wimp out and start playing any style which is NOT Death/Gore/Grind, then you're a commercial sell out or just plainly a fake pussy poser.
10. Artwork plays a very, very important factor in your overall work as a band. Pictures stolen from the Gore Gallery or other now famous Gore, Pathological sites simply show how uncreative and retarded you are. Artwork should be a cheesy, hand drawn sick painting done by the band members themselves.
11. If you do not show some originality in your music(k), you suck and untalented aswell. Also usual, plain and boring live performances prove you're a born loser further more.
If you disagree, don't fit in or whatever with these rules, consider yourself a homo and out of the scene.
We are sorry for any inconveniences we caused. If this has offended you in any possible way.
We the staff sincerely don't give a shit and we can also add that you can go fuck yourself in a traditional, inferior, feminine manner.

Deadly dolphins on the loose
Thirty-six military dolphins carrying 'toxic dart' guns and trained by the US military to shoot terrorists and pinpoint spies underwater, could be on the loose in the Gulf of Mexico, freed by Hurricane Katrina.
Experts who have “studied the US navy's cetacean training exercises” say divers and surfers risk attack, says the Guardian Unlimited, going on, “The US navy admits it has been training dolphins for military purposes, but has refused to confirm that any are missing.
“Dolphins have been trained in attack-and-kill missions since the Cold War. The US Atlantic bottlenose dolphins have apparently been taught to shoot terrorists attacking military vessels. Their coastal compound was breached during the storm, sweeping them out to sea.”
It’s vital the dolphins are caught quickly, says Leo Sheridan, an accident investigator who’s worked for government and industry and who says he’s “received intelligence from sources close to the US government's marine fisheries service confirming dolphins had escaped,” according to the Guardian.
“My concern is that they have learnt to shoot at divers in wetsuits who have simulated terrorists in exercises,” the story has him saying.
“If divers or windsurfers are mistaken for a spy or suicide bomber and if equipped with special harnesses carrying toxic darts, they could fire,” he said. “The darts are designed to put the target to sleep so they can be interrogated later, but what happens if the victim is not found for hours?”
A classified US Navy Cetacean Intelligence Mission was started in San Diego in 1989, “where dolphins, fitted with harnesses and small electrodes planted under their skin, were taught to patrol and protect Trident submarines in harbour and stationary warships at sea,” says the Guardian, adding:
“Criticism from animal rights groups ensured the use of dolphins became more secretive. But the project gained impetus after the Yemen terror attack on the USS Cole in 2000. Dolphins have also been used to detect mines near an Iraqi port.”
In a The Observer story, "Sheridan explained how, in 1989, the Navy began its classified Cetacean Intelligence Mission," says the Earth Island Journal. "The San Diego-based operation involved fitting dolphins with neck harnesses that pressed small electrodes into their skin.
"The animals were taught to recognize and drown enemy divers. The dolphins could be remotely monitored and controlled via electric signals transmitted through the neck harness. In order to prevent the dolphins and the Navy's technology from falling into the wrong hands, a small explosive charge was planted in the harness on the underside of the animal's neck."
But dolphin assassins would make great fodder for a B-movie suspense script.
Oops, sorry; that's been done.

Blast beat
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Blast beats are drum beats consisting of torrents of alternating or simultaneous snare and bass drums which increase the speed, density, and percussiveness of death metal, black metal and grindcore. The hi-hat or a ride cymbal is often played simultaneously with the bass drum and the snare drum at the same time, and occasionally a crash cymbal or china cup is also featured. Diverse patterns and timings are also frequently employed by more technical players. While this method is often used to create a forceful climax, a blastbeat can constitute the bulk of an entire song.
Blast beats are normally played in tempos from 180 bpm upwards, with so-called "hyperblast beats" (achieved by using a one-handed roll on the snare and hi-hat and double bass drum) existing in the range of 260-340 bpm. A typical blast beat consists of 8th note snare and 8th or 16th note bass drum hits, on the top of which a cymbal, normally a hi-hat or a ride, is hit, in Quarter or 8th notes. Variations exist. Some people maintain the bass drum should be played with one foot for the best effect; others prefer a double bass drum.
Blast beats have their roots in hardcore punk as well as thrash metal, however in modern standards the snare work is frequently comparable to established snare patterns in jazz. Early blast beats (the original use in metal is generally attributed to SOD and Napalm Death) were generally quite slow and less precise compared to today's standards. The blast beat is a fundamental component in nearly all of extreme metal. Bands making extensive use of it include Origin, Cryptopsy, Napalm Death, Dying Fetus, Suffocation and Dark Funeral among others.

Anyone who would wear a brand new Master of Puppets T-shirt in this day and age is an obvious poser. Give me a break. I threw away all my Metallica T-shirts when little 12 year old girls started wearing them at the mall 15 years ago. I'm not about to go out and buy another one.
