Munch Museum halts sale of 'Scream' board game
The Munch Museum in Oslo, which was robbed of its world-famous painting "The Scream" in a daring heist last year, agreed to stop selling a controversial board game inspired by the theft. "The city of Oslo has a different view on this than we do and has said that we should not sell this game... It has let us know that and we will bow to the request," museum spokeswoman Jorunn Christoffersen told AFP. The game, "The Mystery of The Scream", has been criticized in Norway's artistic circles since it went on sale last week, including at the Munch Museum's gift shop. "In principle, I find it a bit in bad taste to make a game out of the theft of 'The Scream'," Kaare Berntsen, the artistic director of the Kaare Berntsen Gallery in Oslo, told AFP earlier this week. "My initial reaction is to disapprove of an initiative that helps trivialize a national and international drama while the painting is still missing," he said. During the dramatic robbery in August 2004, two armed and hooded thieves burst into the museum and threatened a member of staff with a gun as stunned tourists looked on. Ripping Norwegian artist Edvard Munch's "The Scream" and his "Madonna" from the walls, the robbers fled the scene in a stolen car driven by an accomplice. The paintings, believed to be worth as much as 100 million dollars (83 million euros), are still missing. "It is not difficult for us to understand that selling this game is controversial. We have decided not to turn this into an matter of principle," Christoffersen said, adding that all copies of the game were removed from the museum gift shop. Created by the Aschehoug publishing house, the game is pitched at children aged more than six years, with participants playing the roles of detectives and or robbers. The makers said the game was educational. "In addition to 'The Scream', the game has 36 cards featuring different artworks that the children know. It's a fun way for them to learn about the diversity of artistic creativity," the head of Aschehoug's games division, Magnus Skrede, said.

Wookies Need Love Too
Scott Hug & Michael Magnan
Hiromi Yoshii gallery 10/15 – 11/5 2005

Following on from their artistic inquest into American politics last year at John Connelly Presents in New York, Hug and Magnan return with ornamental mass media. For their exhibition at the Hiromi Yoshi gallery, Hug and Magnan have redesigned their childhood obsessions into a critique of mass media spectacle in order to find new possibilities for the future. Star Wars has already reached cult status and could be seen as a religion for thousands of die-hard fans. Scott Hug and Michael Magnan have reconsidered the three first episodes of Star Wars in broader political terms, manifesting itself as a homemade and personal version of merchandise, characters and the philosophy of Star Wars. The artists are well aware of the tendency to write off any material produced on the basis of such monumental cultural output such as Star Wars as a homage or tribute to an empty culture industry. The conflict between the dark side and the jedi’s are translated into formal concerns, perfection and total control versus impulse and emotion. The merchandize produced for the Star Wars arch transforms into paintings through appropriating the über-designed spectacle created by George Lucas. Sleeping bags turn into soft paintings, embroidered by hand. Activity books are suddenly a source for abstraction or ambiguous remnants of childhood games. Instead of nostalgically looking to the past, Hug and Magnan want to take this opportunity to construct new possibilities out of the everyday, while complicating the concepts that were easy to accept for a kid. When the first film was released in 1977 the simple and optimistic story seemed to hold great hopes for the future, and a similar world with amazing technology and great design, much like the one depicted in Star Wars, seemed as a probable way to go. 30 years later, the last installment of the Star Wars enterprise was released with Lucas going overboard on the design and too digital. The excitement of space and a galaxy far far away might seem mundane today, but the exponential potential is still there. Other technologies, like robotics have seen great evolutionary leaps over the past decade, so a Star Wars future might just be around the corner after all. Hug and Magnan have revisited the optimism of the first installment and worked through the elements they find most important, from formal concerns to philosophical questions. The main protagonists in this exhibition are the supporting cast consisting of wookies and droids. Chewbacca’s repressed desire for Han Solo and his friendship with C-3PO and R2D2 turn into an epic in itself, explored formally through an emphasis on design and technology, done by hand, with an eye to the relationship between emotionally charged dark force and the controlled jedi. The exhibition is part of Hug and Magnan’s devoted research of mass-media in order to find space for personal solutions and political transgression.

Coma chameleon - Seth Putnam’s near-death experience
BY CARLY CARIOLI
Seth Putnam should be dead, and he knows it. On October 12, 2004, several heavy-metal message boards posted the news that Putnam — the leader of Boston’s notorious grindcore band Anal Cunt — had been hospitalized and had lapsed into a coma. Some thought it was a joke; those who didn’t suspected an attack of karma. AC’s 1997 album I Like It When You Die (Earache) included the song "You’re In a Coma": "You’re a fucking vegetable, we tried to pull the plug/but you still wouldn’t die, you’re a dumb stupid fag/you shit in a bag, you piss in a tube/you can’t walk, you can’t move." It’s not even a contender for the most tasteless AC song. "I hope a big black Jew split his skull open," read one Web-board post, referencing two groups Putnam’s baited in songs. The next day, a message appeared on the singer’s official site acknowledging that he’d been hospitalized. Hours later, it disappeared. A family member contacted by the Phoenix declined comment. Rumor had it he’d been found unconscious in a hotel room. The natural suspicion was an OD: Putnam made no secret of shooting heroin. Months passed. A friend of Putnam’s contacted the Phoenix and offered an account of the night Putnam disappeared — pimps, prostitutes, crack, heroin, and lots of alcohol were on the menu. The source said Putnam was in such bad shape that his doctors, fearing irreparable brain damage, discussed pulling the plug. Now it was December. Friends said Putnam was in rehab, bedridden and on dialysis. Contacted for comment, Putnam’s mother said her son had a seizure, passed out, and contracted an antibiotic-resistant strain of pneumonia. She claimed there had been no alcohol or heroin in his toxicology reports. During our talk, she became so enraged she accidentally locked her keys in her car. The eyewitness called back the next day and said the family had threatened to hand him to the cops if he didn’t recant. A day later, he retracted his retraction. In June, somewhat miraculously, Putnam and Anal Cunt showed up at Great Scott, asked their friends Eyehategod to borrow some set time, and played their first show since Putnam’s coma. He used a walker and sang sitting down. It was the first time he’d performed sober in 11 years. In August he posted a message on his site admitting the cause of his coma was an OD. He explained away the earlier evasions by saying there had been a drug-possession case against him that had recently been dropped. A couple weeks before the one-year anniversary of his overdose, I called to see how he was doing. I asked him how it felt to be in a coma. "Actually, it turned out it was just as gay as the song I wrote nine years ago — being in a coma was just as fuckin’ stupid as I wrote it was. We did a show on August 27 in Albany and we played ‘You’re in a Coma’ for the first time ever live. I don’t want people to think I’m a hypocrite. I don’t want people to think that I can’t make fun of myself." In other words, if people want to know if he’s still going to be an asshole . . . "Definitely. I wouldn’t want to be a hypocrite and say, ‘Ooh, you shouldn’t talk about that kind of shit.’ That’s not the way I am, you know?" Putnam’s naturally reticent around strangers; for months this was interpreted by doctors as a sign of brain damage. "I actually had to change my whole attitude and have normal conversations to fucking prove that I wasn’t fucking retarded." Putnam was indeed in a coma for several days, and in intensive care for a month. He says it wasn’t a heroin OD: "I have a really high drug and alcohol tolerance." He says he bought $200 worth of crack, then smoked and drank on his way to a friend’s birthday party. When he got there, one of the guests, who’d recently gotten out of jail, was fucking a $12 prostitute in the back of a van. Seth smoked his crack, shot heroin, and drank a fifth of whiskey. The next day he felt fine. "I was like normal. And then I started getting really depressed and stuff like that, and basically this guy asked for a ride home and I said no." Why? "Because I think I was going to go to a hotel room and kill myself." Putnam bought a gram of heroin with the intention of ending his life. He rented a hotel room and "made up this monster shot that would have easily killed me." In 1998 Putnam OD’d and was dead for 10 minutes; the paramedics who revived him told him he’d have permanent brain damage. When he arrived at the hospital he felt fine, so he walked home. This time, he sat in the room and decided not to kill himself. He switched rooms and spent another day at the hotel. When he couldn’t get to sleep, he took some Ambien sleeping pills. "I took all two months’ worth. I guess that was what knocked me out." He woke up days later in Spaulding Hospital, unable to move. He sustained severe nerve damage. He had a tube in his throat. Even after months of physical therapy, his right hand and his left leg don’t work properly. In February, he moved to a Newton nursing home, where he had only an hour of therapy a day. "I just started walking around the grounds by myself, like 15 minutes a day. And I would basically lift weights every day. I kinda got back into shape by myself." He now has a membership at the YMCA, and works out regularly. He is making plans to record and hopes to play again, this time standing up, as early as December. "I live in a foster home for cripples," he says of his new life, but he is grateful to be in a state-run program that allows him a degree of freedom, even when he relapses. "I got to drinking in July. I went out and got fucked up and I fell on the back of my head and split my head open, so they said they wouldn’t let me go out anymore for a while. I basically worked my time back so I can go out and do whatever I want now." I asked him if he was trying to stay clean. "What do you want?" he asked. "The real answer or the one people are reading?"I think it’s kinda maybe a good thing for me," he says of the overdose, "because my life was kind of going downhill. Like I was smoking crack all the time and being a real mess and shit like that. I don’t want to be a suicidal mess anymore

BUSTED JESUS COMIX by David Johnston
Loosely based on shocking court case against Mike Diana, the first and only artist ever convicted of obscenity.
When 19 year old Marco created a comic book, the community leaders of Tallahassee, Florida took him to court for obscenity. They won. Now Marco is a convicted felon, and is banned by law from drawing for three years. Loosely based on a shocking Florida court case, BUSTED JESUS COMIX is irreverently funny and incredibly relevant, serving as a cautionary tale for the "culture wars" playing out on our national political stage.
Featuring Bruce Barton*, Michael Bell*, Paul Caiola, R. Jane Casserly*, Brian Fuqua*, Vince Gatton*, Tracey Gilbert*, John Koprowski, David Lapkin* and Joseph C. Yeargain.Directed by Gary Shrader

This is one of the best Anthony Bratxon CDs I heard in a while. Since 1995 he has been doing Ghost Trance Music exclusively…I haven’t got into that really before so I am not the person to explain it, but but it deals with repetitive patterns (kind of like American minimalism) and with a lot of references and influences of different ethnic music. Composition no. 247 is written for two wind instruments and a bagpipe with microtonal tuning. It sounds totally “out of tune”, kaleidoscopic and cool…reminds me of  Khen music from Laos . The piece is dedicated to Arabic female Oum Kaltsoum.
